A wartime decree orders young men from industry and campus life into service. The poem laments the loss of opportunity as sons are drafted or drafted-like, sacrificing dreams for national duty. It contrasts apprenticeships and education with military service, questioning wages, hours, and personal choice. The speaker asks for gratitude and worthiness from the nation.
