Rivers School Board approves staff hires and repairs

The Rivers School Board met on Thursday with Dr C R D Lyon presiding. G M Henderson of Oak River is confirmed as teacher for grades 7 and 8 at 1000 per year. R G Sinclair reappointed Sec Treas for 1926 27 at 150 per year. C Nowe to repair four rooms and hire help. School opens August 30.

War Memorial Tags Boost by Community Club on Fair Day

The Community Club increased its War Memorial contribution by selling Tags during Fair Day. Miss Lenal Nowe won the prize for the highest amount collected as collectors and amounts follow.

Pool Advance For 1926 Crop Set At $1

Central Selling Agency directors set initial crop advances in Fort William in store values. No. 1 northern wheat $1.00 per bushel, 3 C.W. barley 50 cents, 2 C.W. oats 34 cents, 1 C.W. flax 150, 2 C.W. rye 70 cents. Third payment on last year’s crop to be issued before month end. two payments already made include initial $1 and 20 cent interim on March 15.

Wheatland pair win Community Club tennis final

On Saturday evening at Rivers tennis courts the June tournament final pitted Mr. Gunn and Miss Barr of Bradwardine against S. Howard and Miss Lizzie Howard of Wheatland. The Wheatland duo triumphed in a competitive match.

War Memorial Committee lists local WWI honorees

A sub committee was formed to prepare a list of our honored dead from the Great War for the Monument. Members T. W. Offen J. H. Thompson and R. N. Dunsifore compiled names, inviting public input. Rivers Council minutes from July 21 show tax cancellations for Mrs. E Tivy 1924 and a 1926 tax rate package with General School 32 mills Mun Commissioner 4 Special 2 Debenture 15 General Municipal 5 Frontage 15c and 10 percent late-payment penalty. A bylaw to confirm these measures is to be prepared. Councillor Often to represent town at the Tax Sale. The meeting adjourned.

Ten years ago the Gazette reports from Rivers on Andy Young’s front line experiences and heavy losses, with 400 of his battalion reported as casualties. E. E. Berkey leaves a Melville post for a similar job. Mr and Mrs Crosby plan to move to Transcona.
