Rivers Consolidated School District Holds First Ratepayers Meeting

A first meeting of ratepayers will be held July 26 to elect a board of trustees. Rivers school pupils Mabel Crowe Annie McFadden Willie Lamond Willie Rea Russell Porter and Agnes Kent passed their entrance examinations. The Rivers Fair Board has arranged for the band of the 99th Regiment to attend Fair Day.

Tenders for a refreshment booth and privileges at the fair grounds on Rivers Sports Day August 3 are invited. Submissions must be received by the undersigned by Tuesday noon July 31.

The Rivers Town Council met Wednesday July 18 with Mayor Norman presiding. After approving the prior meeting’s minutes a resolution was carried directing Councillor Often to represent the town at the tax sale on July 26. The meeting then adjourned.

Rivers Plans Sports Day With $500 Prize Pool

A meeting of the Rivers Annual Sports Day committee in the town hall discussed holding a Sports Day on Friday August 3. Prizes total 500 dollars with 275 in base ball and 125 in football. Officials include J Thompson and E J Forman.

Orangemen Hold Church Parade in St James Service

Rivers L C L No 1944 held its annual church parade on Sunday July 22 with a 3 p.m. divine service at St James Church. Brethren from Cardale and Hamiota attended as Rev Long urged unity and Protestant duty while noting the 12th July celebration and the Ne Temere Decree fight. A cordial afternoon ended with thanks, visitors, and a lunch prepared by Order ladies.

Rivers Trustees Advertise For New School Principal

Principal D McLeod visited Friday to discuss Rivers High School vacancy. He was re engaged as Principal but has resigned to seek an assistant principal post in Winnipeg. The Rivers School Board met Friday and will advertise to fill the vacancy, with the community regret over his departure.

Obituary of John Cole 83 Visited Daughter in Rivers

John Cole aged 83 died at his daughter Mrs James Cluff’s home in Rivers on Friday July 20 after a quiet decline. Born in County Carlow Ireland he lived mainly in Ontario and later traveled to the prairie provinces where his children reside. Funeral at Union Church with Orange Order burial rites at Rivers cemetery, eight children survive including William Cluff and Mrs J H Cluff.

Harvest Help from England Opens Western Canada Options

The Canadian Pacific Railway moves to bring 61 000 workers from Great Britain to Western Canada for harvest duties. White Star and Cunard endorse the plan, offering about half the regular third class fare to Winnipeg and a $20 seaport fare plus 25 percent off ocean fare after a month’s work. Reduced mileage rates apply from Winnipeg west to prairie centers. Sailings from Britain to Quebec run August 1 to 15.
