Winnipeg January 19 Chief Justice EB A McPherson urged magistrates to impose the lash on young criminals who refuse discipline. In the court of appeal eight-year sentences for two juveniles were reduced to five years combined, as the court compared with a 23 year old involved in the same armed robbery. The youths Charles Vandal 15 and Donald John Sandford 17 had held up two policemen and stolen their revolvers, a decision tied to a separate case involving Jason Bird 23.

Winnipeg January 20 The Norma Grain company Ltd was fined 1000 dollars in provincial police court after pleading guilty to Foreign Exchange act charges. Crown counsel said 15000 dollars in currency was involved and the firm operated inter company accounts with non residents without reporting to the foreign exchange control board.

Five Die in Woodstock Fire Family Tragedy
A fire at a makeshift home near Woodstock Illinois killed the Schmitz family of five. Ralph Schmitz age 49 his wife Inez 36 and their children James 7 LaVerne 5 and John 2 were believed asleep in bunk beds when the blaze began in the converted milk truck with tarpaper additions. Local authorities described the home as improvised and the tragedy occurred in the early hours.
