The week brought visits from Alfred Paddock from Biggar and Mrs. H McDonald of Brandon. Families moved to Rivers from Wheatland while many locals hosted relatives. a bridge and cribbage tournament at St. Anthony's drew a fair turnout with multiple prize winners listed.
Rivers WMS held its annual meeting January 16 at Mrs J A McKenzie home. Rev F L W McNally led devotion and installed 1952 officers including Mrs F O Dyer president and Mrs W G Irvine vice president. Committee chairs and program details, plus weekly Cub and Scout meetings, were announced.
Bradwardine air cadets and guests enjoyed the annual party in the Kenton Community Hall with Rivers orchestra providing music. Bradwardine high school bonspiel results feature Art Milroy rink winning the challenge, with Don Wood taking top in the second event and Gary Graham, Doreen Common placing well. British Consols saw Gordon Taylor Rivers rink lose to N. Kroger Oak River, while Gary Graham’s rink placed second in a seed club bonspiel at Hamiota. Bradwardine Legion held bingo night, J Blatchford rink entering Brandon bonspiel. Bob English elected YPS president with Vicki Wiens secretary and Jean Gerrard treasurer. Next YPS meeting Jan 30 at G. Gerrard’s home. Vote on Friday.
The Manitoba premier Douglas Campbell announced that increased financial aid for education will be recommended by the provincial government at the next legislative session. Details on the amount and distribution among school districts await the legislature meeting. The appeal honors the James White benefit with thanks to Rivers Canadian Legion and others.
A chimney blaze swept the Rug gles Brown farm home southwest of Rivers during Saturday’s storm. A pail of water dumped down the chimney put out the flames.
