Fire destroys home of Robert Hill

Fire erupted shortly before 10 o clock Sunday morning at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. R J Hill. Firemen fought the blaze with chemical engines but could not save the house and contents. The Hill couple and their baby escaped unharmed though Mr Hill suffered facial burns. Neighbors including Mr and Mrs Thos Brown and others faced possible spread to adjacent homes but the fire was contained to the Hills' dwelling with insurance coverage noted.

The Farmer's Dollar and Canada’s Prosperity

The Lethbridge Herald argues for aligning farm income with the city dollar to secure permanent prosperity. It contends that high wages in secondary industries support tax burdens and buying power, but farmers must earn enough to buy goods. otherwise city wages must drop to meet farm earnings.

Church News Services at Rivers and Ancram

The Church of England notes February 12th as Sexagesima Sunday with services at St James Rivers and St Matthews Ancram. At Rivers the Anglican Junior Glee Club will perform The Garden of Prayer under Mrs J C Cousins during the evening service.

United Church Sunday Services and Choir Practice Schedule

The United Church lists Rev W R Donogh as speaker for Sundays February 12 with subjects The Church in Action at 11 00 am Pettapiece 3 00 pm Rivers 7 30 pm and Sunday School at 2 00 pm. Choir members are to attend practice at 8 pm Friday. Rev W R Donogh and E O Dyer attended Brandon Presbytery meetings Tuesday and Wednesday.

Curling Club Members Visit Bradwardine for Ambassador Trophy

Rivers club sent Alf Wareham Bert Taylor John Shylega Cecil White Frank Taylor Tom Bradt Fred Bredt and Evan White to Bradwardine Friday to present the Ambassador Trophy to the sister club. Alf Wareham gave the award, which will go to Griswold. Frank Taylor led a close Hebberlin Cup victory returning the cup to Rivers.

Commemorative Medals Planned for Canadian King Visit

The Dominion government will distribute about 2,256,000 bronze medals free to school children to mark the King's and Queen's visit to Canada next summer. Bronze and silver medallions will also be sold as souvenirs at reasonable prices.

January cold spell noted with local rink actions

TEN YEARS AGO this week in the Gazette recalls a cold January. H R Morley led a rink with Stevenson Taylor and Piercy in Portege la Prairie play. The district mourns Janes Post aged young son of Mr and Mrs Stanley Post Bradwardine. St James parish services led by Mr Hewins. E J Forman starts flour and feed business. Rivers School ranked high in Education Dept report. Joe Thompson’s rink 13 in Grand Challenge fours at Brandon bonspiel. Gazette opposed debenture sale at 88c on the dollar.

Rivers Town Council Minutes February Meeting Minutes

The Rivers Town Council met Monday February 6 with Mayor Dunsmore presiding. Resolutions adopted include approving previous minutes, paying General accounts 1196 59 and Electric Light 53747, final reading of Bylaw 304 for 1939 meetings, final reading of Bylaw 305 confirming Officers for 1939, both signed by the Mayor and Secretary Treasurer with the corporation seal. The council adjourned.

Calico Dance at LOOF Hall Wednesday Evening

A Calico Dance will be held in the LOOF Hall on Wednesday February 15 under the auspices of Rivers Odd Timers Association. Dancing begins at 9:30 with prizes for novelty dances. Lunch will be served. Admission 35 cents. Come out next Wednesday evening for a jolly time.

Veterans to assist police during royal visit next summer

War veterans will be used to assist the regular police if needed during the visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen next summer.
