Bell Crossing Closed Near Town After Safety Concerns

Bell Crossing about two miles southeast of town is closed temporarily as workers widen the approach. The Rivers School Board has argued the crossing endangers children transported to school, and the railway has been upgrading conditions, leading to a traffic stoppage at the crossing.

Girl Dies Suddenly at Home in Winnipeg

Fifteen year old Helen Wadsworth died suddenly at her home on Noble avenue after a stroke while waiting for her mother. Dr J A Meavish arrived and pronounced life extinct. The body was taken to Bardal's for coroner's inquiry. Municipal and local condolences voiced for the Wadsworth family.

Tremendous storm damages noted across the west

Ten years ago on Thursday August 14 a mighty storm swept the west reaching Rivers at 3 15 pm causing widespread damage districts report. The fair building was twisted chimneys toppled and windows blown in while overall losses were eclipsed by the local destruction. Archbishop Matheson led a consecration at St James Church. Tom Suthers a former Rivers resident suffered a serious accident at Transcona last Sunday.

Daly Council Minutes Read and Approved

Daly Council minutes from Wheatland dated August 1923 show all members present. The previous meeting minutes were read and approved. Correspondence from the Highway Commissioner and bridge engineer regarding culverts plus Workmen’s Compensation Board on contract protection and Lakeside on soldier settlement lands were read.

Municipal council approves bylaw readings and rate changes

The council adopted resolutions on refunds and tax adjustments for various lots, approved payments on contracts N 16-11-22 and N 6-12-22, and passed annual bylaws reducing municipal rates by several mills while adjusting school district rates across Assiniboine No.148 to Rivers No.1484. John A. Dyer, Sec Treas signed and sealed the minutes.
