Obituary of Mrs Gelsthorpe Hazel Belle Gelsthorpe

Hazel Belle Gelsthorpe, wife of P C Gelsthorpe and second daughter of Mr and Mrs W E Stewart of Rivers, died in Montreal hospital April 4 at age 29 years 8 months. Born in Penden nis, she married March 19 1925 in Montreal and left an infant son six days old. Interred in Brandon. Survived by husband, parents, three sisters and three brothers. Memorial service planned at United Church Sunday evening.

Death of Herbert Encar McNevin at General Hospital

Herbert Edgar McNevin 18 died Saturday after an operation at the General Hospital. Born Baldur Man he lived in Winnipeg five years and studied pharmacy while employed by Sun Drug Co. He served as a privates in Lord Strathcona's Horse. He leaves his mother Mrs Catherine McNevin five sisters Mrs M C McLean Beryl Patricia Marjorie Joy and one brother Beckerton all in Winnipeg or Regina. His father former principal died here.

Local council debates electric light by law

The Village Council read the Electric Light by law twice and will submit it to ratepayers for ratification. A 20 year contract with Northern Utilities Corporation Limited would supply the town with electric light. The vote is set for May 22.

Ladies Aid Honors Departing Member at Farewell Gathering

Members and friends of the Ladies Aid of the United Church gathered at Mrs. LePage’s home to bid farewell to Mrs. Joe Lindsay who moved to a Lavinia Manitoba farm. They presented a silver spoon set and read a heartfelt address praising her service and cheerfulness.

Rivers School Board Meeting Minutes Report

The Rivers School Board met Thursday evening with Dr G R C Lyon chairing. Minutes of the last meeting were approved and the finance committee report totaling 6080 was approved for payment.

Towns Warn Cyclists for Riding on Sidewalks

A number of individuals riding bicycles on sidewalks have been warned. Authorities caution that prosecutions will follow if behavior is not corrected.

Annual Meeting of Rivers Curling Club

The Rivers Curling Club held its annual meeting in Town Hall with President Bert Taylor presiding. Officers for the coming year were chosen and a vote of thanks extended to secretary treasurer Chas Nowe. The club closed the season with a healthy balance and praised rink manager Joe Lindsay for his service.

Fire scare near Greek Catholic Church ends quickly

Monday evening the fire department responded to a blaze near the Greek Catholic Church. Grass near the church caught, but the chemical engine and hoses contained the flames without damage, and no serious fire occurred. Chief James Taylor led the response, proving readiness for greater emergencies.

J. A. McKenzie receives a large potato allotment. Home Economics Society hosted a millinery demonstration last week. A Marriage At The Manse occurred on April 8 with Miss Annie Brown and Wilfred L. Parson. Mrs Jos. Thompson serves as Hon. President and Miss Edith Dunsmore leads the Ladies Baseball Club. The English Church spire has been completed and is the town’s tallest.
