First Western Canada Woman Doctor 1892 Missionary Couple
Elizabeth Matheson of Winnipeg became the region’s first woman doctor over 50 years ago. She traveled with missionary husband John Matheson to Onion Lake north of Lloydminster in 1892, where early white settlement and Indian reserves marked the beginnings of medical work. Her three daughters later carried on the practice, with two teaching on northern Ontario reserves.
