Pioneer families of the early settlement era shaped Rivers area

Centuries of settlers from Britain such as Shanks Thompson Smith Treloar McFarlane Bailey Dyer and Wedderburn arrived by Assiniboine River route to Portage la Prairie then by ox carts. They lived in sod dugouts with dog skin bedding and furniture before Rivers became a town in 1913. In the 1880s residents sought timber near the national park as plains remained barren. Farm teams trekked to the area for seasons, some without drivers.
