A July 1 2000 issue of The Rivers Banner presents an opinion oriented Perspective section led by the editor in chief. The page reflects the newspaper’s community focus and voice.
A long opinion piece reflects on Canada Day 2000 with praise for the nation and warnings about ungodliness and governance. It critiques Robert Mugabe, notes Anglican Church lawsuits over residential schools, and explores native welfare, reserves, and property rights as cautions about centralized power and democracy.
The piece argues aboriginal Canadians lag in economic mobility due to lack of property rights and centralised reserve governance. It cites low Native family income, high reliance on transfers, and calls for reform such as removing the Indian Act barriers, decentralizing decision making, and giving funds to individuals for local investment. It frames a shift toward reserve economies with wider citizen control.
