Rivers in Bloom report by Dorothy Beedie
The next Rivers in Bloom meeting is set for February 5 at 7 p.m. in Prairie Crocus Regional Library with all are welcome. Clerodendrum, the bleeding heart vine, is described as a vigorous twining shrub that can reach eight to ten feet but can be kept under four feet by trimming. It can be trained around spikes or grown in a hanging basket. Flowering requires warm, humid conditions and bright filtered light. Leaves are heart shaped up to five inches long. Flowers appear in clusters of 10 to 30 with white bells and scarlet blooms. Daily misting and moist pebble trays aid humidity. Use a standard liquid fertilizer biweekly. Move young plants to larger pots as roots fill the container, while mature plants may flower best in slightly small pots. Repot at the end of each rest period with fresh soil and bone meal. After rest, trim back at least half the previous year’s growth to keep plants compact. Happy gardening.
