Spy Swinging From Pines Into Freedom During War
A Norwegian fisheries officer Sven von Somme and his brother Jacob acted as spies for the Allies against Nazi Germany. Jacob was executed in 1943 after aiding sabotage in Telmark. Sven was captured, escaped, and evaded 900 soldiers with bloodhounds before undertaking a 200 mile trek through Sweden to Britain. He climbed pines to swing between trees, aided by a farmer and a safe house until false papers were secured. The tale echoes Birches by Robert Frost.
