The note explains Christmas events at churches and the skating rink, post office hours, and a tea with oysters. It lists municipal council candidates including A M McLane and others, along with a budget summary for the year and upcoming elections, urging unity and good candidates for the next council.
The December 5 1885 council notes show payment of a note to G B Davidson 3500 with interest, room rent 16, various expenses for A M McLane S H Caswell J McEwan K E Daniels J H Benson and others, plus bylaws on road obstructions tax payment extension and a 10 percent penalty for unpaid taxes. A January 15 tax roll return deadline and adjournment followed with a special meeting on December 8 1885.
Indian Head now boasts a telephone exchange with Free Masons organized under W M H J Eberts and officers G Gamble W M and J A Kammerer Sec KR Crawford Treas. J A Kammerer suffered a serious fall while stringing wire on a ladder, fracturing his right leg and likely sidelined for most of winter. The Indian Head council met with Chairman Jos Sheppard and councillors Harland, Rae, Robertson, Buncell, Kroley. they recommended payment of specified amounts.
The Conmee Farm shipped eighteen carloads of wheat east this season and has 5 000 bushels left with 960 acres ready for next season. A Saturday meeting in Wolseley discussed selecting a municipal council candidate, with R J Fraser and A B Bompas among those nominated. The group favored a flour mill project and discussed a new irrigation-like scheme for farmers.
L Dodds proposes a municipal mill and elevator plan to boost trade in the district. A Roller Flour Mill of 100 barrels daily at $23,000, plus a $2,000 elevator, would be funded by $25,000 in debentures with no sinking fund for ten years. Rent would cover interest and insurance, with $625 for repairs, and taxables to grow as land value increases.
On the 2nd inst the wedding took place at the bride’s father’s residence Mr William J Hare married Miss Alice Bertha Garratt both of Kenlia Pheasant Plains. Rev Thos Lawson officiated.
