Ambitious Dutch plot and Clive’s rising role in India

In Calcutta a thwarted Dutch plan to seize control is attributed to Col. Clive, Col. Ford, and English troops who defeat the Dutch with 717 killed or wounded while suffering minimal losses. Letters from Portsmouth note ships arrival and naval activity around Plymouth and Cowes. Reports describe Clive’s imminent departure, potential property purchases for him, and continuing European tensions including Italian war rumors and English memorials at the Hague. Citations from Quebec, Dublin, and London fronts relay military movements, ship actions, and civic notes.
