Fighting a French frigate near Plymouth in January
A Plymouth letter dated January 1 recounts an afternoon engagement with a French king's frigate. The English vessel touched sides, with around one hundred enemy dead on deck and eleven English killed, thirty eight wounded. The captain commanded with courage while repairing damage that prevented pursuit. Additional fleet movements and arrivals from Portsmouth, Fowey, and Jamaica are noted, including ships sailing for West Indies and other ports.
