Police push for stronger enforcement of liquor laws and closer alignment with provincial act. Aldermen say current bylaw on bartender licensing is unworkable and must be redrafted to cover minors in bars and improve traceability of intoxication losses.
Col. Davis city engineer will take a month long vacation to appear as an expert witness in a case in Guelph Ontario. He will forfeit salary during absence. Council approved the leave after consideration of impact. He expects to return by year end.
The Kaien Island club hosted a well attended dance in its quarters last night. Grey's orchestra provided finest music and a moonlight lighting arrangement drew praise. Moon dances with lights off created a pretty effect. Light refreshments were supplied by club ladies tied to the ladies' athletic association. The event ended at one o'clock and was hailed a great success.
Captain McCoskrie proposes using a tug and self opening scows to tow muskeg and garbage out to sea with wharfage for dumping. The idea faces questions from the city engineer and Health committee as officials weigh city ownership of scows versus towing. Two other workers were injured in a GTP line accident. Tom Nekich died from head injuries and coroners await inquest results.
The D G S Quadra under Capt Hackett called today for supplies. The Venture arrived with freight and sailed for Goose Bay. The Senator, which called here yesterday, was two days behind schedule after stopping at several canneries and small ports for fish and freight and delayed at the wharf by a missing customs officer.
This evening in the Empress Theatre the school children present an entertainment under the Ladies' Aid of the Hospital. Proceeds benefit the institution. The Boy Scouts participate and girls perform drills. All are invited to attend.
The city engineer reported that Barker’s request for a dumping ground for lot excavations should be approved at Hays Cove. Alderman Hilditech noted no closer site existed and the committee regretted the lack of alternatives. The report was adopted with no dumping charges as suggested by Alderman Lynch.
Gunner Allen's execution for murder is postponed to February 2 pending appeal options after stay granted by Justice Clement. The retrial decision awaits Chief Justice Hunter's return and possible appeal on crown evidence. Separate: Scott Act election date moved to December 14 and electoral lists under review with provincial lists likely guiding preparation.
The finance committee chaired by Ali Pattullo proposed insurance terms at the Monday meeting but did not win support from all insurance representatives. The engineer urged bidding for two million feet of lumber with most already provided. Estimates showed about 1 877 000 feet had been supplied and another 1 250 000 feet needed plus repairs. A motion called for bids on at least 500 000 feet and the process proceeded after confirmation of street work costs. Miss Renwick, niece of Mr and Mrs Lockhart, visits the city.
Moore & Co representing Maryland Casualty Company argue for equal opportunity for other firms to bid if the council chooses a course. They insured all contractors on city work and wrote more than all others combined. Other representatives show additional firms regularly charge two percent, suggesting a mistake. No action has been taken.
Speculation grows on city council race as Mayor Stork is expected to run again though no firm announcement has been made. Names such as Aldermen Pattullo Mob and William Manson circulate, with Manson possibly being asked to accept nomination upon his return to the city.

In Victoria on November 25 the bylaw to acquire Esquimalt Waterworks was defeated by 400 votes. The proposal tally stood 1,172 for and 1,472 against. The fire protection bylaw authorizing 50000 dollars and local improvement bylaws were carried.
I. J. Chamberlin vice president of G T P with Winnipeg HQ visited Prince Rupert this week to inspect the first 100 miles of Pacific coast construction. He praised the track built to date and Mehan's efforts while noting more work is hoped for and speeded up early spring track laying beyond the 100 mile point. He outlined plans to extend toward Aldermere and discussed winter construction, tunnels, and river crossing progress.
