Rocher de Boule mine reports the main ore vein may be reached around Christmas with the tunnel now at 2000 feet through granite and planned to extend about 7000 feet to exit near the Bulkley River. If successful the ore body would secure a major coastal producer and open other mountain properties.
Justice Morrison recalled the loss of Capt A Carss at the court opening noting a brilliant future cut short. He said such losses daily affect Canada as many young Canadians sacrifice for liberty and justice.
In May a school for sightless children opened at 1288 Melville Street Vancouver under teacher Mrs. E Burke. Gov ernment funds cover costs so no charges to parents. Braille system used. Pupils from Victoria and Vancouver with plans to expand province wide. Parents urged to contact for admission for New Year. Government praise for providing critical education.
The jury failed to convict R. R. Gosden on perjury charges tied to the Vancouver plugging episode. After three hours of deliberation and a last ballot of 10 to 2, the foreman announced no agreement. Justice Gregory noted Gosden as a picturesque yet principled figure and cautioned against bias, emphasizing it is better for a guilty man to go free than an innocent one be convicted.
Washington reports the United States has protested the deportation of Belgian civilians to Germany for forced labor in German factories. Washington delegates in Berlin will raise the issue directly with Chancellor Von Bethmann-Hollweg.
French War Minister General Roques arrived in Athens and conferred with King Constantine about Allied claims for a zone under Allied control to prevent clashes between Royalist and Venizelist forces. The move aims to avert Civil War among Greek factions as World War era tensions unfold.
The Grand Trunk Pacific Telegraph Company announces free transmission of casualty telegrams for soldiers at the front. Relatives whose address changed or not in the directory must register at the office with old and new addresses, soldier’s name, and regimental number. Ottawa must see official notice to request services.
Word has reached the city that two locally known men were wounded at the front. Marry Hayes a longshoreman was shot in the wrist and Jack Hampson of Fiddler Creek known as Laney Jack a Lancashireman was shot in the arms. Neither is seriously wounded and both are in hospital.
London reports the British are pressing forward along the Ancre River in a concentrated effort to take Transloy. Beauieux court has fallen and the tally of prisoners rises as the advance continues. Continued on page four.
The Supreme Court awarded L. J. Mackay fifteen hundred dollars after a jury found the Canadian Fish and Cold Storage Company liable for his leg injury from a falling fish box in the glazing room. Judge Morrison presided, with a jury of eight. Evidence showed Mackay’s leg was broken when a wheel sank into a worn floor hole, despite claims of safety measures.
