The French Line steamer Rochambeau reports a fire in its coal bunkers while sailing toward Halifax. About 650 aboard include 421 passengers and 238 crew, with a large cargo of war supplies including 2 541 cases of cartridges and 136 bales of cotton. captain says no danger.
Ald Casey raised a complaint in a letter about discourteous conduct by a civic official in the Treasurer's Department. He cited a Thursday phone conversation and urged a committee investigate. The Mayor ordered the Finance Committee to look into the matter.
The city council considered an early closing bylaw aimed at lining grocers with other stores. The measure was discussed at a council meeting with continuation noted for more details on page four.
Major J W Warden arrived to command the new northern battalion and begin recruiting after a quick inspection. He plans to visit Metlakatla with Lieut Christie to explore securing an Indian band for the regiment. The council also chose a line chief for the Telephone Department, keeping T C Duncan in charge. P A Phillipps of New Westminster was selected, recommended by the Northern Electric engineer.
Copenhagen reports the steamer Birgit sunk by a German submarine near Geale Sweden with the crew landed. London notes British steamers Buresk and Glenmore sunk and their crews saved.
In Alaska waters herrings are already present indicating a local run soon. Harbor watchers anticipate harvests as the schooner John P. reports a large catch in Seymour Canal sent from Petersburg via G. W. Mcerson last night.
Paris dispatch reports Premier Pachitch of Serbia expressing strong optimism about Balkan developments. He cites Austro-German and Bulgarian actions, notes that Serbian troops resist and that a general war may begin. Paris reports French and British reinforcements capture Plevenar Pass as Kitchener coordinates with Joffre Briand to shape Balkan efforts.
Working men of Prince Rupert and district are warned that more men in Anyox seek work than the company can hire. Do not travel to Anyox expecting employment.
The city council heard a report from the city electrician on electric power costs. Alderman Casey urged reexamining the issue and noted the city uses only about one sixth of its capacity. He suggested considering the Cold Storage plant as a potential consumer.
Ald Kerr notes Cold Storage could buy power at 1 cent per kilowatt, cheaper than coal. Holland, market clerk, claims $4 000 bond costs $50, would pay about half. Solicitor suggests $2 000 may suffice. Montgomery questions who pays for bonds for other officials and why lower paid man pays. Referred to Finance Committee.
Halibut shipments arrive steadily with nine refrigerator cars sent east yesterday. The Albatross docked with 45,000 pounds and the Polaris 12,000 pounds while the Magnolia delivered 8,000. The San Jose brought 80,000 pounds and sold to the National Independent Company represented by O. Bernhoff. Yesterday nine carloads left for the east.
A late fourth century departure of Romans from Britain led to the origin of the Wisteddfod or national bardic congress of Wales. The object of these gatherings continued on Page Three.
The Cooks and Waiters Union plans its regular Thursday evening gathering at 8:80 in Carpenters Hall. Members are slated to attend the routine session.
