Paris reports Verdun artillery waning and infantry activity nearly vanish while small shelling continues at Ayocourt Forest south of Fort Douaumont. The piece notes German strain and hints at broader wartime shifts as observers discuss morale and supply pressures.
London May 10 Lord Crewe announced in the House of Lords that Lord Wimbourne the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland had resigned due to the Irish revolution.
A Saloniki dispatch reports a Grand Council in the Sultan's Palace to consider peace terms and calls in principal mosques urge preparation for liberation. A select committee is forming and British forces are given respect as grave events are anticipated. London, May 10. Khalif Pasha, Turkish commander at Kut, chimes in.
Copenhagen May 10 reports say fire swept through the Prussian Altona aeroplane factory as a mechanic poured petrol. Sixty two other airships ready or under construction were lost along with the factory.
Secretary Lansing reports a new German note stating the Sussex attack is admitted. The note says the submarine commander is punished and promises of reparations have been made. Also mentions M. M. Stephens rents houses.
Special to The Journal Victoria May 10 Link by link the chain of evidence in the Vancouver by election corruption case is forged before the House Investigation Committee Mrs Moore keeper of the Robson Rooms Vancouver testified that Herbert Pearce lodged there with others on election day and rented two rooms for them Howard Anderson chairman of the Liberal voters list committee said Pearce worked for J T Scott who handled Vancouver duties for the Liberal Association and that Scott provided a 303 name list marked not to be challenged Anderson and McTaggart clashed with Scott over the list and Scott issued voting instructions on Ward Two which were later canceled by McTaggart the 308 name list was later linked to Gosden before continuation on page three.
The Vancouver firm decides to operate from Prince Rupert as three sturdy vessels arrive to support deep sea fishing. The Prince Rupert fleet will supervise boat outfitting and supply gurdies and essentials for a home port there. Vessels Pharaon Tiderip and M. R. T. belong to Ocean Foods Company Limited of Vancouver. Captain C. R. Betts, company representative and principal owner, traveled aboard the Pharaon, the fleet flagship.
The Canadian Shell Committee formed in 1914 and disbanded in 1915 saved the British Government at least 35 million dollars, per a statement filed by T. F. Hellmuth before the Royal Commission. The report, endorsed by Gen. Bertram and others, outlines wartime contracts and savings. continuation noted on page three.
T P Woodland, a Prince Rupert native and former resident, fell at the front while serving in the Engineer Regiment. In a letter to his brother G A Woodland he urged Canadians to enlist, saying trenches lay 400 yards from German lines and that he hoped to join the colors sooner. He expressed no regrets about service and faced death bravely.
The Board arrived in port from Forrester Island with 6,000 pounds of red spring salmon bought by P. J. Sandwich for Cold Storage at 12 cents per pound. This marks the first American salmon shipment to reach here this year amid growing fish trade activity toward Prince Rupert. Halibut receipts were lighter with the Jim Ham bringing 8,000 pounds into the Hi Gill and the Nellie selling 8,000 pounds to the Pacific Fish series at 1 1/4 cents. No registration contemplated.
