Dutch liner Tubantia torpedoed close to the Norhin der light ship in the North Sea. A wireless report says the ship is sinking and the crew is leaving, with all aboard believed saved. The vessel carried several Americans. Rev. Dr. White visited local missions on his coast tour.
London on March 16 the second group of married men who attested under the Derby scheme is delayed indefinitely as the War Office revises the star red list of single men. The move aims to reduce exemptions among singles and shift many to active service.
The Alpha, a Pacific American Fisheries tender, disappeared off here early yesterday with six crew members drowned. Only one, John Christianson, survived, and he believes none of the others will reach land. The vessel capsized between Lucy Island and the Kennahan Islands after a heavy swell. Captain Miller, an experienced navigator from South Bend, and the Chief Engineer were on deck when the boat went down. The crew had recently been assembled at Bellingham and were bound for Exclusion Inlet, Alaska. The 64 foot oil burner was built for sheltered waters and was top heavy, aiding its loss. A tester arrived at the Mayor's office from Captain Van der Byl, now in command of the 62nd Battalion machine gun section, to thank Prince Rupert and Atlin residents for the gift of two Lewis machine guns. The guns await embarkation at Halifax as inscribed by donors.
Capt Brandt and his men of the Prince Rupert company of the 102nd battalion will depart Saturday morning for Comox to join the rest of the unit and finish training. The city notes this contingent is as capable as prior war departures in endurance and physique.
A soldier named Presh B Mex from Holmbure returns with a chicken ranch on Porches Island and will supply Ru pert via George P. McColl's Grocery Store. Eggs priced at 40 cents a dozen this week and guaranteed fishy taste free.
Auditor W. E. Hodges of Vancouver and Mr. Ray of the same firm arrived to audit Prince Rupert's finances. Hodges reports the city pays 70 percent of its taxes and stands alone among cities in that regard, while many other towns have 70 percent unpaid. He predicts Prince Rupert will become a great city.
A Parcel Post Sale proceeds today at Red Cross Rooms in aid of the Red Cross Fund. Parcels from across the Dominion and United States will be offered for 25 cents each, unopened, with contents valued at or above that amount. The sale is run by Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Eggert, Mrs. Sweet, Mrs. McNicholl, Mrs. Kergin, and Mrs. Mehan.
Reports from Petrograd indicate Russians in Mesopotamia are cooperating with British forces in Persia. Turks arrived too late to help and are now retreating as the campaign appears to be collapsing.
Allied aviators raided the Krupy gun shops at Essen and destroyed six 1 lan. Essen lies 170 miles north of Verdun. Other raids hit Munich and Cladbach in Bavaria. London neither confirms nor denies the report but rejoicing followed in the metropolis.
Pocketbook with papers belonging to G. Foellmers lost. Finder may return it to Hotel Prince Rupert where a reward of 1 will be paid.
Paris reports the third Verdun battle has failed to develop as German forces show fatigue or hesitation. Artillery bombardment is slackened on the left bank of the Meuse, with stronger action on the right near Haudremont and Dunlop. A surprise attack east of the Forest of Apremont yielded many prisoners.
Special Correspondent from English Press Gallery in Victoria reports Mr. Place of Nanaimo argues most things in British Columbia are wrong and faults the present Liberal government. He urges Vancouver voters to reject the Premier at the next election, contending Liberals attract voters from New York and Conservatives from the ore yards. The remarks reflect a sombre tone in the Legislature during the address in reply to the throne speech.
