Reports note a fierce clash at Karna with Turkish forces routed while German cruiser Kolberg engagement favored Allied forces on the French front. In Victoria BC the legislature discussed war expenditures and farm credits to sustain mobilization and overseas reinforcements.
Paris January 27 An official statement says the enemy made a sudden attack on St Mary Wood but was repulsed as the war continues. The Militia Department staff has grown by about 600 with hundreds more at headquarters and divisional areas. No new armories or drill halls will be built during the war.
Ottawa prepares for session with about one hundred million in war costs. Departments’ estimates are being trimmed to essentials as public works are scaled back. In other news Capt W B Clayton arrives home from Work Point Barracks after course for field officer rank.
London reports the German cruiser Kolberg was sunk in Sunday's North Sea action. Admiral Beatty's statement says battle cruisers Lion and Tiger were only slightly damaged. German prisoners claim Kolberg sank en route to Heligoland. British officers and crew praised.
Washington dispatch reports a Turkish force near Karna was defeated by British troops. Earlier summaries from Constanti note British forces advancing into Asiatic Turkey and a British offensive announced by the Foreign Office. Despatches describe heavy losses in the engagement.
Eric Kingsford Smith recounts the Sydney versus Emden duel off Cocos Island from Colombo. The Sydney opened fire at long range, damaged the Emden, and forced it ashore on North Keeling Island after belttled exchanges. casualties included two killed and several wounded.
Last evening in McIntyre Block's Railway Mens Hall the first four nurses from the School of Training received diplomas and pins in a formal ceremony. A concert, then a reception, bouquets for each graduate and Miss McTavish, plus a dance to Westholme Orchestra followed. City officials, clergy, and medical staff praised the graduates as the Ladies' Auxiliary provided refreshments and the railway union hosted the event.
The G T P steamer Prince George brought a number of passengers to the city yesterday. Diplomas from the Hospital were handed to each nurse by the president, with Miss McTatish pinning the class pins as they passed. The ship had a number of young ladies aboard. (Continued on Page Four.)
