Paris report states German forces briefly held a trench north of Notre Dame Delorette before a counter-attack recaptured it. Allies gained slight ground near Thiepval, repelled three assaults on Laboisselle, and held off an Argonne advance in heavy fighting. About 100 prisoners were captured in the Notre Dame Delorette engagement.
The Princess Patricia's regiment suffers three wounded, one injured, one ill as they spearhead a bayonet assault near Ypres. London dispatch notes a dramatic rush with cries of For Canada and Old England. German counterfire and artillery followed, but the Canadians gained over a mile before pausing.
M P H S Clements is due to arrive Sunday night by the steamer Venture and stay until Wednesday morning. He will depart for Ottawa by the G T P to attend the February 4 Parliament session. His visit will include talks on the local fishing situation.
A new year brings a tariff amendment across Canada prohibiting import of aigrettes egret plumes osprey plumes and various wild bird parts whether raw or manufactured. The change takes effect January first and continues on page four.
Earl Grey recounts an intense anti British sentiment he heard from a Kaiser ally. He proposed a vote of thanks to the Earl of Meath who read a paper before the Colonial Institute, and Grey spoke of a conversation he had with one of Kaiser’s subjects.
On January 18 German forces attacked near the bridge at a location described as Vitkoritze in the North Rawa region. Russian artillery and rifle fire repulsed the assault, after a prior attempt to board a German ship and interrogation of a German aboard, which yielded no significant information.

In Western Galicia on January 18 a German attack was repulsed after heavy losses and cannon fire. Our troops held positions south of Radloif and set fires to enemy encampments as they were compelled to retreat. In Bukowina, Russian forces advanced with success and attacked in compact detachments.
JD C. McGregor of Vancouver and H. D. Leyens explored Prince Rupert with plans to invest in Continental Trust. Leyens praised the city after tours of the Board of Trade luncheon, Cold Storage, and the Drydock. They expect rapid growth and future calls from steamship lines on the Pacific coast.
