Prince George February 25 Mayor Gillett was committed for trial by the Police Magistrate on a charge of cutting wires of a local electric light supplier. The case has sparked controversy and may lead to litigation and hard feeling as the mayor favored municipal ownership of the lighting system.
A dance to aid Canadian War Prisoners in Germany raised $859.50 after a meeting to wind up the business. J. Y. Rochester presented the finances showing tickets issued and sold, tickets returned, receipts of 387.50 from sales plus 3.00 paid admissions and 1.00 from Mrs. De Gex for a total of 391.50. San Juan and New England firms announce rapid start on construction of dockside sheds at the G I P wharf. New England Fish Company manager Nunan says plans include a 40 by 60 foot building with upper floor for box stock and box making, plus storage for 100 tons of ice to ensure a constant supply.
Russian forces dislodged Turks at Bidesurkh Pass in Persia and occupied Sakhne Pass on February 25. Russians pursue retreating Turkish troops toward Kermanshah, capturing three field guns one mountain gun shells and eight ammunition wagons filled with machine guns.
The Oddfeldws Leap Year Ball will be held on February 29 in the evening. Proceeds go to Laia of the Patriotic Fund to support its charitable programs.
G T P officials led by A G McNichols and Captain Nicholson arrived after talks in Winnipeg with W P Hinton to launch an Alaskan service. A temporary start is set for March 16 using the Prince John from here to Alaskan ports, followed by a regular summer schedule with weekly Alaska calls.
French forces held Verdun against a massive German assault as artillery pounded lines and the French defense rose from trenches to unleash deadly machine gun fire. German attacks paused with French lines secured along Champagnaville and Ornes heights.
The recruiting meeting last evening at the Empress Theatre drew fair attendance. Col Warden urged stronger support and noted fewer prospects than desired for enlistees. Mayor McCaffery presided with speakers including Gol Warden Capt Brandt Lieut Christie Bowden Capt McNeill M D Rev Father Bunoz Rev Canon Rix and Rev Spaulding. Canon Rix warned that Prince Rupert needed patriotic men for Britain and the Empire while the French stood as true brothers in arms. The piece ends noting the call remains urgent despite peace hopes.
Lieut Adair Carss of the 102nd Battalion has gone to Winnipeg to take a special course of instruction in musketry and bayonet exercises. He received orders to proceed the day before leaving. The course is part of the military training program to qualify battalion members in this line of training.
P G Flaherty of the Smithers dispatcher's office departs for Denver Colorado where a new situation awaits him His departure is mourned by the trainmen and local colleagues acknowledging his service and steady presence on the job.
