G W Nickerson, now in Hamilton, praises the Ottawa delegation for fishery concessions. He notes the advisory board appointment and hopes Prince Rupert becomes the foremost Pacific fishing port. Nickerson has long supported the local industry financially and otherwise.
Victoria February 28. Royal Commission to authorize by election plugging enquiry in the coming session with Mr Justice Galliher as chairman and Justices Macdonald and Murphy as members. Mr Douglas Armour KC to act as counsel for the government.
Premier Brewster says uncertainty surrounds the final railway route from the coast into Alberta's north. After $27 million spent on the Pacific and Great Eastern line, a shorter path via Bella Coola Inlet and Pine Pass is being studied. Engineers review several options. no decision until surveys are complete.
London reports a hostile raid east of Vermelles failed with heavy enemy casualties and many prisoners left behind. Artillery activity remains severe from Ypres to the Somme.
J P Babcock of the Provincial Fisheries Department lectured to the Victoria Natural History Society on how salmon scales tell age. Lantern slides illustrated that Pacific salmon scales show circular rings, with most sockeye maturing in year four but some in year five, and cohoe in year three.
A development syndicate in Tiedley plans to lease and bond mining claims with monthly investments of five or ten dollars. Contributors, including workers, would fund claim development with pay ore profits used to cover bonds and dividends. The scheme, praised for other camps, is a high risk but potentially rewarding gamble.
New Zealand troops south of Armentieres pierced the German line for about 300 yards and held the position for a half hour. They destroyed dugouts and trench works as German dead littered the enemy lines. Forty four prisoners were taken.
A Canadian tour by Captain Rupert Guinness and Lady Gwen dolen Guinness promoted recruiting for the Overseas Division of the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve. They organized committees across towns, aided by Hon. Mr. Hazen, leading to hundreds of new recruits. Before leaving, Lady Gwen dolen arranged a pendant gift for mothers and wives who helped recruit, bearing the motto I helped to serve.
The Ikeda mines on the Queen Charlottes are slated for major development this year amid a management reorganization. New capital is anticipated and mining will expand. Manager Norrie of the Silver Standard near Hazelton will oversee Tkeda work while continuing to manage the Silver Standard.
City council heard plans from P Duryee and D A Macdonald for a large illustrated publication titled the Imperial Highway. The four western provinces and many cities will gain space to promote business with about 30 000 copies circulated. Prince Rupert and local firms will receive prominent listings. James Martin of the Queen Charlottes is in town. Tron beds at cut in two prices at Tites mid winter sale.
The British note cites a statement on Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare from February in which losses appear small. It provides ship arrival and sailing totals at UK ports, noting exclusions for coastwise and minor vessels and highlighting a disparity between ships sunk and total tonnage.
