The American Republics endorse President Wilsons severance of relations with Germany. Bolivia and Cuba approve the break in diplomatic ties over the submarine warfare. Brazil notes a public note, and many Cubans offer service to the government as support grows.
London reports 19 606 dependents of Canadian soldiers in training or serving in England. Of these, 945 are wives of officers, 148 adult next of kin, and 676 officers' children among the officers' line. Other ranks show 5 176 wives, 7 474 children, and 5 187 other next of kin.
The latest census reports about 3,000,000 German born people living in the United States and around 6,000,000 people with German parentage. The data highlights substantial German ancestry among the American population.

The British Anchor liner California, 8 669 tons, was sunk off the Irish coast by a German submarine with no warning. Of 184 crew, 160 saved. 31 passengers saved, 55 lives lost. Only up to four U S citizens aboard and none believed to perish. Washington reports February 8.
Amsterdam reports a massive explosion at the Nobel munition factory in Sel haus on Saturday. Two hundred people, mostly women, are said to have died in the disaster.
The Returned Soldiers Association invites all interested in veterans welfare to attend the February 14 ball in Railwaymen's Hall. Prince Rupert's First Contingent departed Victoria for the front on February 14, and the dance commemorates this event.
The British Columbia Bureau of Mines reports 67,757,075 pounds of copper produced in 1916, valued at $18,429,924, the highest in the province's history. Major gains come from Granby Company's Hidden Creek mine at Anyox and Britannia, with Granby accounting for 59 percent of provincial output. Rocher de Boule near Hazelton produced about 10,000 tons. The market price rose from 24 cents to 1.9 dollars per pound, boosting value and production.
Col Roosevelt and his four sons offer their services to the State for active duty if war with Germany is declared. A playful exchange recalls the elder Roosevelt's remark about nursing children during the Great War while their mother sold flags.
Sealed tenders addressed to the resigned will be received up to February 20 1917 for steaming coals for Imperial and Canadian ships and vessels at Prince Rupert BC for the fiscal year ending April 1 1917.

J Barker, recently back from the front and discharged from a Liverpool hospital, formerly worked as an operator on the Government Telegraph line north of Hazelton. He has returned to British Columbia and is appointed Game Warden for the Hazelton district.
