In London on January 31 a clear government victory emerged in the Northwest Durham bye election. Liberal A Williams won 7241 votes, Unionist J O Hardicker 5025, Labour G H Stuart 1557, yielding a Liberal lead of 2116 and a government majority over both opposition groups. Unionists, counting on local support and Orangemen, were disappointed as the result dampened their hopes on the Ulster question and naval issues. Sidney Billingham departed from the Prince Rupert for the south.

Pioneer Joe Thompson Dies After Illness in Hazelton
Joseph B. Thompson of Smithers died last Monday at Hazelton Hospital from gall stones after a period of serious illness. Born in England, he settled near Aldermere in the Bulkley Valley in 1906. He was an Odd Fellow and Eagle, survived by a widow and a Seattle-bound daughter, with funeral services held in Hazelton, pallbearers drawn from local Odd Fellows.
