Stubborn fighting reported at Batum Transcaucasia as Trebizond forces clash with Russians. Turkish troops routed by transports guns aiding Russian frontier guards. Also notice: legislature sets January 21 meeting date and police witnesses in the Hazelton May case depart for home.
John May, the Hazelton Indian, was found guilty of the murder of Albert Taylor at Sealey Gulch bridge on September 28. He was sentenced to death by Mr. Justice Clement, with execution set for March 5 at New Westminster jail. May remained emotionless and asked for an interpreter as the verdict was read.
The Emperor of Russia returned a flag to France that had been in German hands since the 1870 war, following its capture by Russians during their East Prussia invasion.
Petrograd reports German air raids on Cracow with forty seven houses destroyed and thirty killed while bombardment continues. The Cracow defense shifts as Austrians withdraw toward Lodz to reinforce the northern Vistula campaign.

An Order in Council passed on Saturday December 26 designates the day as a public and bank holiday, with only one weekday between Christmas Day and the following Sunday. The rule also applies to Saturday January 2, 1914.
