Liberal criticism in Victoria centers on rising civil government costs as population and business grow. Conservatives counter that expenses rise with education, new settlements like Peace River, and anticipated mining expansion. They warn Liberals would curb growth to avoid higher costs, risking public credit and investment.
George D. Tite received a letter from Mrs Rush of Manitoba, sister of Lieut. James Russell, confirming the death of the former resident. Russell died August 28 after writing August 8 saying shells were bursting nearby. He was well known and highly respected in Prince Rupert.
The fishing boat Alaska returned Sunday with a full load of halibut weighing 90 000 pounds after six days at the banks. Captain Nels Hansen set off again last night for another trip. The vessel uses six dories and aims to return soon with another strong haul. Schools reopened yesterday but steamers’ delays from fog kept many teachers away. The Roman Catholic School opened yesterday with sisters from the east supervising.

Prof Hering and wife arrived in the city aboard the Prince George and he will speak on Christian Science at Westholme Theatre tonight.
