London reports the German government regrets the sinking of the Danish steamer Betty in the North Sea. Berlin promises compensation for the loss. The Western Front sees ongoing artillery actions. The steamer Delhi is reported to be entering docks.
On the Western Front an advanced enemy trench in Artois north of Souchez near Neuville-Rolincourt was destroyed by a mine. Artillery activity persisted with shells on Arras Mont Didier and Rheims as Allied counterattacks reported successful at multiple points. Premier McBride foresees no prohibition until war end and favors a public referendum on war-time policies.
Paris reports two French torpedo boats sank a German destroyer off Ostend last night while our boats returned undamaged. Also listed are Northwestern League results Tacoma 2 Seattle 1 and various National League scores with multiple games.
A White River flood isolates Newport Arkansas with water five to twelve feet deep. About five thousand residents are marooned and eight people are feared dead. Mrs J M Brown and Miss B Brown arrived in Little Rock from Endako formerly Prince Rupert. In Tokyo Premier Okuma says Japan will boost aid to Russia with government and private munitions support and plant mobilization.
The German Baltic fleet attacking Riga was shattered and withdrew after losing the battle cruiser Moltke and several other ships. A British submarine aiding Russians sunk Moltke. a landing party on four barges was annihilated and captured. The Russian gunboat Sivutch was sunk in the engagement. News from Petrograd says the capital feels secure and rejoices at Allied successes.
The Delhi, beached near Ketchikan for months, will arrive this week to enter the GTP floating dock for repairs. Tugs McCullough and Topaz will tow her south to dock and assess damage to hull and machinery, with costs potentially reaching ten to fifteen thousand dollars.
The city of Prince Rupert received offers for its four year debentures totaling 15000 dollars with 4500 earmarked for Seal Cove plank road and the rest for plank road repairs. Toronto firms bid 90 for the issue, a point Alderman Montgomery calls low as it yields 10 percent. The Mayor notes only two bids, while Alderman Dubhavn supports the offer as the best obtainable. Montgomery suggests local firms accept debentures at par if possible and questions road coverage for cold storage. The council may defer decision for a week.
Hugh McPherson of Terrace, a longtime district resident, died Sunday night at the hospital from tuberculosis after a period of declining health. He had been bedridden for weeks. The funeral is planned for Wednesday afternoon. He was a native of Scotland.
