Russians retire from Lenis Nadrazen area near Warsaw

An official Petrograd statement says Russian forces have withdrawn from the Lenis Nadrazen sector west of Warsaw. The report notes casualties are rising while German and Allied pressure eases on the front.

Twenty Seven Lost in Erie Flood Disaster

Erie, Aug. 4. Twenty seven persons dead and property losses near three million dollars follow a cloudburst flood. Wreckage piles up to one hundred feet in height, concealing possible additional victims. Three hundred houses and fifty stores were demolished.

Calgary reports the Western Canada Flour Mills Company plans to construct 50 to 100 grain elevators across Alberta during the year to address rising demand. Also noted, baseball scores from Yesterdays games and various league results.

Red Cross Bake Sale at Parkin & Ward’s Store

The Red Cross sale of home cooking will be held Friday in Parkin and Ward’s store. Mrs Shockley and Mrs Tremayne will oversee from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and welcome contributions.

Funeral for John B. Pitman in Port Essington

The funeral mass for John B. Pitman, who died in Port Essington on Friday, was held yesterday. Requiem High Mass was celebrated at 9 o'clock at the Roman Catholic Church, and the remains were interred at Fairview Cemetery. The B. C. Undertakers handled the arrangements.

Tobacco Fund for Canadians Overseas Aid Drive

Local Post Office will collect funds to buy tobacco and cigarettes for soldiers. Overseas Club ships at no charge in bond through British and French governments. One quarter costs 25 cents for 50 cigarettes 4 oz tobacco a box of matches and a postcard. One dollar buys 50 cigarettes 4 oz tobacco a briar pipe lighter pouch matches and postcard. Postcards include donor name and address for soldier’s thanks. Packages may be sent to individuals with proper regiment. Continued on page three.

Enjoyable Tea For Red Cross At Prince Rupert Hotel

In the Hotel Prince Rupert dining room yesterday afternoon Mrs. S. W. Morrow and Mrs. Perkins hosted a Red Cross tea from 3 to 4 30 with hotel staff wearing red crosses. The room bore Allied flags and flowers while a Victrola played patriotic selections. Over 30 dollars was raised for the Red Cross Fund.

War Meeting in Prince Rupert Vows Victory and Memorial

A mass meeting at the Auditorium marked the war anniversary with a resolute pledge to persevere to victory in the Allies cause. Speakers praised Britain’s war effort. the Queen Mary Chapter led events with a city procession and a plan for a future monument on the Recreation Grounds.
