British and French forces repelled a German counter-attack north and northeast of Ypres as fresh troops arrive in West Flanders and Northern France. Allies report no German activity west of the canal except at Stoenstraate, while gas shells were used in the fighting.
Attendees aboard the Prince Rupert heard Rev H R Grant discuss pioneers and pioneering with focus on migration from Abraham and the Israelites to Britain and other nations. Attorney General W J Bowser attended as a guest and spoke briefly after the address. A fine luncheon followed on the G T P steamer.
The G T P announces in June a three train weekly and three steamship weekly service linking Prince Rupert, Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, and Anyox. Trains leave Prince Rupert Mondays Thursdays Saturdays with arrivals Mondays Wednesdays Fridays. Steamers Prince Rupert and Prince George run a 30 hour schedule to Vancouver and connect with southern ports.
The Indian Commission completed a two week absence and returned to Prince Rupert by special train from the coast. Attendee list includes N W White chair, D H McDowall, G Carmichael, J A McKenna, J McArthur secretary, and Andy Tyson district inspector. They will depart south Friday morning and plan a May return.
In face of continued opposition Allied troops have established a firm line at the Gallipoli end, repelling attacks at Saribair and steadily advancing. Turkish forces prepared wire entanglements and deep spike pits to hamper landings.
A letter from Carl Hanington written March 29 from the front describes a day of shellfire near infantry trenches including shells bursting 100 yards away and one hitting 20 feet from a house. He recounts digging to a cellar and coping with dirt, coffee, and improvised Welsh rarebit while observing from a roof.
Attorney general Bowser met the fish committee and other supporters at City Hall to discuss securing full facilities at the Government Wharf for handling fish until Seal Cove wharf is built. Bowser and MP William Manson examined the site and agreed that existing arrangements can serve independent buyers without delaying current business. Mooring plans must wait for the city wharf completion.
The newly formed Chapter of the Children of the Empire in our city collected for the Canadian Red Cross Society on Saturday. Dorothy Tremayne served as secretary and Gladys Kemp as treasurer as young volunteers contributed amounts totaling several dollars for the war relief effort.
Ottawa reports Deputy Minister of Marine Mr Johnson and Chief Departmental Engineer Col Anderson started today on an inspection trip to the Pacific Coast visiting Prince Rupert.
