British paratroopers of the First Airborne Division withdraw under Montgomery order after eight days of heavy fighting in Arnhem Holland. About 2,000 evacuated across the Rhine. more than 1,200 of the original 7,000 men were wounded or left behind. Doctors and medics remained with the troops as the retirement marked a heroic, costly episode in the war.
The Soviet authorities report that the Soviet Government had not told Eden the Polish Army detachments found in Poland during the Soviet advance were now fighting with Russians against the Germans. The matter requires delicacy and caution as acts are hard to ascertain.
Australian authorities disclosed a leaflet raid over Batavia and other West Java cities days before the first Allied air attack. Pamphlets in Dutch and Malay announced progress toward the liberation of Holland and news of Allied advances in the Pacific and Europe.
On the Adriatic front British and Dominion troops crossed the Rubicon River, extending a bridgehead over 16 miles, while advances along the Talim front reached two miles in depth. ADELAIDE Thursday's predicted deficit of £400,000 for the 1944-5 financial year was announced by Premier and Treasurer Mr T Playford in his sixth Budget. He criticized the interim income tax allocation to South Australia and noted shortfalls in revenue, with £16,061,000 expenditure and £15,661,000 revenue yielding a £400,000 deficit. additional funds were allotted for education and social health services.

Mrs J McMahon secretary of Pirie Hospital remains confined to bed. Mr B A Searman of Paviteh Street has been a Pirie Hospital patient for weeks with a fractured arm and is improving. After several days in bed a patient in Pirie Hospital was discharged from the surgical ward. Hoare is on leave after four years with TOA service in the Middle East and India. In Canberra a House of Representatives uproar led to suspensions of two Opposition members Mx H L Anthony CP NSW and Ste Feederick Stewart US after a clash over questions to Transport Minister E J Ward regarding the unofficial prosection stance for Geelong Grammar Schoolboys. Speaker J S Rosevear warned and suspended actions as Fadden’s no confidence move failed 38 to 24 while other motions contested the standing orders and seating remained heated.
A well filled Pirie Dovo Hall hosted a St John Ambulance Ball on Wednesday evening with Ambassadors Band playing. Guests and officials entered under guards of honour as District Supts and Mrs led the party through the foyer. Official attendees included multiple district and corps officers, the town clerk, a transport commandant, and other Red Cross representatives.
Applauding cross district leaders and Dr Barbour plus Mrs Barbour and others, the St John Cross group thanks delegates and many benefactors for backing the ambulance brigade ball. Mayor and council staff are praised for loans and courtesies as about 400 danced to vocal items by Mrs Dawn Anderson and Miss Nori Murdout.
