Quorn rail strike ends after person-to-person talks

A four day Quorn railway strike ended with a gentleman’s agreement negotiated by Commonwealth Railways Commissioner G A Gahan and Australian Workers' Union leaders. Casual labour use is limited on the North South line, while goods sheds and yards may employ casual staff as needed. Trains resumed, with the Port Augusta to Adelaide service running again through Quorn Station as stock movements resume. The settlement followed direct talks and was hailed as a personal triumph for Mr. Gahan.

Reorder Medal Adjudicator Name Still Secret

Despite the program’s end last Saturday week no announcement has been made for this year’s Re order Medal Pirie’s top football prize. The adjudicator’s identity remains secret with only a vague belief that the gentleman is temporarily absent from Pirie. J. S. Hockment is cited as the name of the 1933 winner of the medal.

Right to Appeal For Rations

Port Lincoln, Sunday. At a meeting of the Port Lincoln Committee of the Australian Labor Party it was decided to recommend to Mr. Lacey that applicants for unemployment relief, if refused by the department responsible, should have the right to appeal to a properly constituted court. It was claimed this would help prevent victimisation and alleged faulty administration.

Pigeon racing results from Pirie West society flights

Results from Pirie West Homing Society Nos 2 and 3 flights at Wolseley show seventy binds in the first race released at 9 am Sunday and fifty seven pigeons in the second event released at 7 43 am Saturday. Top fliers include Leverington and Dormer entries with distances noted.

Fire Devastates Enfelo Factory and Adjacent Premises

Fire in Sydney last night caused an estimated £2000 damage starting from Graham & Bennett's cotton wool packing premises. A knife sharpening machine ignited the blaze and it spread to two adjoining buildings, destroying stock and premises at F. A. Denvings' furniture factory and severely damaging the building and contents.

NO CHANGE FELLMONGERS STRIKE LOOMS OVER TALKS

Both sides meet today in the wool and tanner industries strike but keep unchanged. Employees reiterate they will not return to work without an immediate conference. Employers refuse to confer until the men resume work. Mr. H. Whiddon says employers will stand behind the federation. some firms are resuming order but warn of possible plant closures. If unresolved, the dispute could spread to butchers, owners, storemen, and other unions.

Van overturns on Port Germein road injures four youths

Four Pirie youths escaping serious harm after a motor van overturns on Port Germein road shortly after 4 pm on Saturday. Driver John Henry O'Dea and passengers Adrian Leonard Williams and Jack Stewart Miller suffered minor inquiries but were sent home after medical checks. Kelh Williams was unharmed. The van, owned by A. L. Williams and Miller, swerved in loose sand three miles from Port Germein. windscreen broken and mudguards bent, no other damage.

Malycha Crowned Premier Rider As Pirie Club Ends Season

The Pirie Cycle Club wrapped its track season with the football premiership. Malycha won the premier rider title and will hold the Leonard Shield and Sash as well as the Sanders Cup for the year. J. Dormer claimed the Flett Cup for seniors and T. McGuire took the Boekelberg Cup for second class riders. Dormer and Synnett contended for the Flett Trophy. Synnett led early but failed to maintain pace. Mulyeha won the Cavery Cup in style, ahead of E. Whitehead and Williams, with other riders including G Williams and J. Rothsheim in the field.

Youth Killed in Car Smash Near Port Wakefield

Sunday near Port Wakefield a car capsized on Adelaide side killing 19 year old Harry George Parish of Minlaton. Six others including Dorothy Ridley 18 and Norman Wauchope postmaster of Minlaton were injured. Norma Wauchope was uninjured.

Farmer is murdered defending his farm in Melbourne

A poultry farmer George Mudford 44 of Sheffield Street West Preston was found dead after a struggle on his property. Detectives believe he woke to thieves and fired from a shotgun before being beaten. Earlier James John was killed by car gangsters in a gambling-related case. Mudford died in the arms of a constable within 20 minutes. The scene showed blood, broken stock, and boot-tracked ground. Thomas Bisson was remanded on vagrancy charges until September 30 with sureties.

Queen of Music Dance Fund Drive At Memorial Hall

The Queen of Music under the ladies committee of the Pioneers' Association hosts a dance in Memorial Hall on Tuesday.
