Australia moves to transform into a springboard base for rapid wartime action. Defence plans propose a 250 million pound program to develop armed forces and a robust scientific and industrial base. By year end the Canberra effort includes rocket range work and large projects kept undisclosed for security.
President W H Thylyr said the Pirie Master Butchers Association would meet on Monday to decide if shops will open Saturday mornings from October 2. They will discuss weekly working period arrangements and related sign changes.

James Bramley, a crew member on the motor vessel Boakley, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment by Mr D L Richards at the Primitive Police Court. The charge, under the Commonwealth Navigation Act, followed a Septem ber incident caused while Bramley was reportedly drinking. Evidence noted no personal gain and that damage might have been worse without timely intervention by engine room crew member John Jackson.
