James Horton aged 50, a retired grocer of Forest Avenue Clarence Gardens, was cleaning clothes with petrol when the spirit caught alight. Producers and traders in Pirie district expected to benefit from a 50 per cent reduction in wharfage at South Australian outports. The new rates will take effect next Wednesday, lowering charges on general cargoes such as groceries wine spirits beer sugar and household items. Outward wharfage to Port Adelaide drops from 32 to 9/6 and inward from 9/6 to 2/9, a notable saving. Wool and sheepskins will also gain, with dual rates cutting from 1/6 4d to 9d at Pirie and 4d at Port Adelaide. The changes could save 2/9 per ton on wool shipments and a substantial amount on sheepskins, with an estimated 1a to 2£60 tons of general cargo arriving weekly from Port Adelaide.
A severe wind storm struck Keswick at around 11 30 am tearing off most of a house roof on Hampton Road and dumping the debris into the adjoining yard. The incident caused damage to windows and structures with no serious injuries reported.
