Trade unions urge the general council of affiliated unions to pursue a forty hour week without pay cuts to cut unemployment. They also call on the British Government to pass laws like America’s Industrial Recovery Act.
A freight train collided with a Chicago to New York passenger service near Binghamton New York. Two coaches telescoped leaving 23 dead and more than 100 injured as rescue teams worked through the wreckage.
In Sydney today two more women leapt from the Harbor Bridge, bringing the death tally to 31 in 18 months. Both unidentified. one fell in the morning, the other at 6 pm after a failed rescue attempt. Bridge worker Walter Kinross tried to save the first woman but failed as she slipped into the water. In Adelaide, the government plans to cut teachers salaries, triggering a definite dispute with the Public Service. Officials foresee possible united action by associations across branches. council will decide at Monday night meeting.
Canberra reports Colonel Weddell, Administrator of the Northern Territory, says the Groote Island mission faces imminent threat from natives. The minister orders all efforts to protect missions but forbids armed expedition until a formal action plan is decided. Equipment for an expedition has sailed from Sydney.
In Melbourne today the Church Missionary Society secretary said the Groote Island Mission is equipped with wireless and would contact the mainland if trouble arose. Reassuring telegrams have been received since Monday.
George Horace Bradley of Colonel Light Gardens former secretary treasurer of No 1 branch of the Southern Star Tent of the Rechabite Order was committed for sentence in Adelaide Police Court today after pleading guilty to fraudulently converting £327 of the order’s funds for his own use. Bradley, father of seven, broke down after his plea.

Prominent Port Pirie civic figure and former two time mayor Montague Lewes Warren has died at his home in Joslin at age 72 after months of ill health. He served many years on the Town Council and was a longtime Smelters employee with Broken Hill Associated Smelters Limited. He leaves his widow Mrs Annie M Warren, once a beloved mayoral figure.

Claude William Wallace and Eric Newlyn were found not guilty of murder in the Bondi killing of John Albert Rowland on May 18. The jury condemned the case as most serious while holding both defendants guilty of manslaughter. Justice Street imposed life sentences with at least 20 years of hard labor.

Perth reports a fierce storm halting Wirths Circus as the menagerie tent collapsed and the main tent suffered heavy damage estimated at £600. In Subiaco a 33 ft branch ripped through a roof near Mrs J G Seppelt’s home, though no injuries occurred as residents sought shelter with neighbors.
