Across all states Australians decisively rejected extending Commonwealth power to control rents and prices. Absentee and military votes, about 600,000, to be counted next. leaders urge responsibility as the six states retain control.
South Australia electoral divisions show Hindmarsh delivering a strong Yes majority while other divisions like Wakefield and Port Adelaide report Yes and No tallies. Central counting office figures from Adelaide list totals for Yes and No across divisions, with Hindmarsh notably high on Yes.
Figures released by divisional returning officer Ro H. Carter show Grey voting no with four exceptions in Port Augusta Whyalla Port Pirie and Territory areas. At Wallaroo R S Gageon’s seat favoured no by 249. Midla ton led no 1 084 to 156 seven to one. Crystal Brook Gladstone and Port Germein also voted no.
The report shows 7,109 votes counted with 4,18 percent for Yes and 1,748 for No across five polling centres. Informal ballots numbered 133. Vine backed the government proposal, while Rindow Vark led the negative at the royal centre. Three questions on the ballot in 1996 saw Yes margins averaging 4,204 to 1,909 against. Clerks at the five centres recorded the totals on Saturday.
Informal ballot slips in Adelaide contained a protest chant by nine unnamed detractors. Voting day saw brisk morning business with a light turnout later, and Sherry closed the courthouse to keep voters orderly.
