At a special meeting the Pirie sub-branch of the Returned Servicemen's League voted 44 to 21 to retain the current constitution. The decision directs the delegate to oppose widening eligibility rules at the State conference in July, with 95 members present and spirited debate lasting about ninety minutes.

Respite from a coal strike is seen after today's conference between the Commonwealth Government and miners representatives. Frank Frahank Drage 66 a long time Pirie resident and butcher at various Main Road and Ellen Street establishments died at his farm on Fort Broughton. A Widely known citizen, Drage led a life of enterprise from bullock wagons in 1889 to designing a freezing system in 1982, and helped during the 18M flood by giving meat to locals without payment. He leaves a wife and four children with brothers and relatives across Pirie and Adelaide.
Canberra reports aim to complete 8500 housing units by June 30 1947 under the 38 which may be funded by April 1. For nine months ended March 31 1946 government sponsored dwellings total 2650 privately sponsored 6300.
A new special bus service organized by Mr. R. Ni Wadmore now brings Pirie High School students from Hundred of Pirie Wannearah Bust and Crystal Brook areas to Pirie. The outward and inward trips alternate weekly to ease morning departures and evening arrivals. Some students used to board at Pic under a government grant for scholars lacking transport. Students from Port Gerind Mambray Creek Nelsbaby and Iron Knob are cared for under boarding schemes, with Warnertown still served by the train. The service followed parent agitation with backing from federal and state members.
CANBERRA Tuesday. Federal Health Minister Senator J. M. Fraser told the National Health and Medical Research Council half yearly meeting that the referendum with the next federal elections would drive social changes in medical and hospital fields.
Edward A. Ted Smith of Pirie Hospital died aged about 72. Born near Kapunda, he trained horses across the North after an early life in farming and a woolshed. His notable horses included Hamlet, Armidale, Red Carlee and Liatus. He married Phoebe Mathews in 1899 and Laura Mathews in 1911, leaving a widow, a son Thorald, two daughters, seven grandchildren, and surviving siblings and in laws.
