Barrett urged energy for the war effort and recruiting while a special committee was formed to study council support for national war aims.
Two British ships the Wessex and the Charles Boyes were sunk after mines struck during operations. Fifteen crew wounded and an officer and several ratings feared killed. The Wessex, of 100 tons, was detached from the die while the other vessel, 200 tons, sank with heavy loss.
Norwegian refugees arriving in Britain recount how about 400 Austrians fighting in Norway were shot by Germans. They described a small fishing boat steered by a wooden oar and reported Major Quisling as killed. The tale comes amid other war news and economic updates.
A youth aged ten shot his mother Myrtle Ray McIntyre 43 in a kitchen at a property seven miles on the Armidale side of Guyra. He then killed himself with a pea rifle in his bedroom. Myrtle McIntyre and her son Frank Colin McIntyre 18 are named. progress reports say the father is in hospital.
In Adelaide a rider on a racing cycle crashed into the rear of a baker's cart on Anza Highway Plimpton. He died hours later in Adelaide Hospital from skull injuries after striking the cart. Shillaberg and Hubert Rosewarne were among others involved. Pirie Town Council met with members Threadgold mayor and aldermen present.
The report notes Yongala recorded 21 degrees, the coldest night of the year so far, with morning lows around that mark. Sydney experienced a low in the same week as the weather coverage highlighted cooler conditions across New South Wales.
