Australia bowls Hampshire out of trouble after early over pressure from O'Reilly. Bradman won the toss and sent Hampshire in to bat under a warm sun following rain yesterday.
In Adelaide the Premier Mr R L Butler charged a Liberal Labor pact aimed at legalising bookmakers while admitting weaknesses in betting laws and naming a Betting Commission. The Assembly heard about election timing, party splits, and finance as the debate touched on taxation, independence, and potential dissolution.
In Melbourne a Banco Court ruling ejected George Elvas Scott, who worked his stepfather’s South Morang farm for 35 years without wages, from the property valued at £2,900. He claimed improvements worth £1,500, with estate recouping £100 and £26 spent on improvements over six years, while opposition centered on uncle Irintian tiresbel’s ownership and a prior promise.
In Canberra a ministerial revolt forced the government to extend medical benefits of the National Insurance Bill to wives and children of insured persons. Sidney reports reveal Percival Taylor aged 21 and Harry Bertram Hodges aged 90 in separate deaths. Taylor, living with his mother in Coomeray, left a two page note quoting J G Wells and expressing suicide thoughts after a nervous breakdown and a plan linked to death. Hodges, a master mariner from Neutral Bay, was found with two breast wounds after his dogs were killed in a car incident, with police noting possible suicide and the letter to the coroner pending inquest.
Sydney report states Alfred Spicer was hanged at Long Bay Penitentiary for the murder of six year old Marcia Hayes. The Thursday execution proceeded without incident and there were no untoward events.
Ottawa reports a lengthy House of Commons discussion on foreign affairs. Prime Minister Mackenzie King states Canada will not wage war independently or via the League of Nations and will not join Empire conflicts without Parliament. Opposition Leader Bennett argues automatic war if the Empire is attacked, while separation is unlikely.
