Balem Macksad a Gilbert Street storekeeper was charged with the murder of Richard Joseph Supple. A remand was granted until June 7 for an inquest with about 20 witnesses expected. Police searched Macksad's shop and seized earth under a concrete slab and a gardening implement for testing.
A historic note recalls a Pirie West fruiterer and greengrocer long ago known in Pirie. He lived with his wife and daughter Miss Phyllis Macksad in a Tenth Street house adjoining the shop and owned two houses in that area. Macksad, said to be an Agsycan, left Pirie for Adelaide after years there. His daughter, now a young woman, visited Pirie with her mother about ten months ago.
London report says BITISH submarine L23 was rammed by the trawler Lord Davidson in fog today. Little damage occurred though the submarine began leaking.
A fireball was seen last night near St Pauls and is said to have burst in a graveyard. The concussion shattered windows in numerous businesses including the Post Office several hundred yards away, witnessed by many people.

Kenneth McMurdo, 23, of Plympton, suffered severe burns to his body and limbs when flames erupted while refueling at Whiting’s service station. Melbourne report on the Dimboola Court hearing where 12 Wimmera farmers faced charges for assaulting Charles Lehmann at Katyll. Police said the men masked and blackened faces, tied Lehmann to a post, and tarred and feathered him after he took possession of a farm. All convicted. two jailed three months, others fined £3.
James Mann a 33-year-old motor mechanic faced charges at Central Court in Sydney for allegedly stealing 3,750,000 francs from Sir Michael Watson in Paris in May of last year and for acting as a fugitive under the extradition treaty with France. He was remanded to May 1. Bail was refused.
Frank Kenneth Stevens told the Hoval Commission on Betting that about 400 illegal bookmakers operate in South Australia today and that for every £1000 on the tote £2000 would be held by bookmakers. He noted 10 years in bookmaking and horse racing. He estimated bookmakers hold about £4,540,000.
In Canberra today in the House of Representatives Mr While the Minister of Trade and Customs rejected reports that permitting Japanese goods into Australia violated the Ottawa Agreement. He spoke vigorously denying any breach and defended the government's trade stance.
A Sydney controlled short wave Empire broadcast linked outposts from Suva to Lord Howe Island during an Royal Empire Society dinner in Wentworth Hotel. Joubert posed as a confidential clerk in the Attorney General’s office, claiming influence, while Shannon admitted Joubert had obtained his release in a prior case involving a motor car collision.
In the Movice Handicap first division at Mentone racing, IVE horses crashed in the straight. Doven's rider A Reed fell first, followed by three more falls and a sixth jockey unseated. Reed suffered concussion, bruised back and abrasions and was admitted to hospital.
