From dawn to dusk over France and Belgium streams of fighters and bombers conducted more than 4 000 sorties and attacked German airfields and railway centres. At a State Fruit Board meeting in Hobart a figure of 3,000,000 bushels of apples rotting on Tasmanian ground was cited as a season loss. The board warned efforts to ship Tasmanian fruit to the mainland were failing and the Apple and Pear Marketing Board would suffer financially. Huon district orchards show thousands of bushels left unsold under the requisition scheme as lack of shipping limits exports.
