At Melbourne Sunday a doorkeeper of the Greek Club accused a soldier of seeking liquor. An altercation led to Perdikoris being knocked down and kicked, losing an eye after hospital surgery. The soldier was arrested on a charge of causing actual bodily harm.
Mr AK Suridge, a steeplejack famed across the Commonwealth for fearless work, died after a 40 foot fall from scaffolding at Whyalla. Suridge left four widows and six children and had painted flagpoles before taking on wireless masts across Western Australia and beyond. His career included Broken Hill during World War and later work on Trades Hall and other buildings in the United Kingdom.
British reports say twelve German planes were downed last night while the Royal Air Force attacked Cologne and the Brest docks in daylight and darkness. German bombers penetrated Britains defense in the Mersey area and injured people with substantial property damage.

Sydney reports two South Australian KAAL officers killed in a blind flying training crash near a coastal area. Pilot Officer Terence Cathal Boyd McManus, 24, formerly of Semaphore, and Pilot Officer Peter Norris Ingoldby, 12, died when their aircraft banked steeply at low altitude and struck telephone wires. McManus was the son of a Royal Australian Navy commander and educated at Scotch College, Adelaide, and Roseworthy Agricultural College.

A Sunday Whyalla motor bus accident left two dead and five others injured. Victims named Ross Dean Gigney 21 a carpenter of Wirrabars and Alexander Clark 08 a foreman webber of Newcastle. Several more men sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital with two minor abrasions discharged later.
