A Port Pirie waterfront report notes an unusually busy April for wheat exports with eight shipments totaling 358,196 bags. The Boxen carried 86,054 bags overseas and the Olympia ferried 71,582 bags, among other consignments.
More overseas vessels are due at Pirie in the next weeks. The vine motorship the Bailaren will load 5,009 tons of ready concentrates, and a consignment of 5,000 tons of wheat will also be loaded for transport.
At Baltic Wharf the Japanese steamer Yoshida Maru is unloading timber for Globe Timber Mills, with 78 men and 12 clerks aboard plus 90 workers on site. The cargo totals 4,326,080 ft of Oregon from Vancouver, to be stored for Broken Hull mines, while 1,000 tons of wheat and 6,000 tons of iron ore are to be loaded at Whyalla and en route to Newcastle. Captain K Uchida reported a favorable passage aside from a brief weather spell.
Melbourne reports the Railways Commissioners refused the Australia Railways Union's appeal against applying the cost of living adjustment of 2 to the basic wage in railway service. The cut will operate from next work.
Investigation results by Mr. E. H. McPhee show food and groceries costs up 3.8 percent in six capitals and 4.4 percent across 40 towns for March. Most states posted declines except Western Australia and South Australia. Victoria fell 4.9 percent, NSW 4.4, Tasmania 4.2, Queensland 4.0. meat rose in Perth Bunbury and Northam while Lithgow Sydney Devonport Hobart Bathurst saw notable drops. Potatoes fluctuated with small increases. jam fell nationwide except in Queensland.

Samuel Ferguson of the Australian Association of British Manufacturers said rings cannot be made economically in Australia. Frederick Ely for Ford Motor Company of Australia argued the industry is not vital and the duty burdens primary producers buying tractors.
The Federal Government received a message from Mrs. Hinkler stating she preferred no funeral arrangements and that the remains should be buried in Brisbane or England. She indicated she would reach England and the government would respect her wishes.

Sydney reports that Winooka the leading Australian miler remains unassigned for a voyage to America. Jockey J Pike has not been definitively engaged to ride the horse though the owners hope to offer terms that will persuade him to travel.
Claude Airs a 27 year old laborer and New South Wales native was arrested in Brisbane on a murder charge over Percival Read a farmer whose body was found in a dry well near Dalby Det Sergt Corbett said Airs admitted when charged at the police station saying yes sergeant He was remanded.
One of four trampers rescued in the Tara rua Ranges last Sunday returned to civilisation on Tuesday. He noted the party endured extreme rationing with doge n sandwiches meat pie sponge cake and apple tarts. An hour later he ate chops vegetables currant tart and tea. On the train home he had soup sponge cake and stew. In Palmerston North he woke to a large breakfast and complained of lingering hunger.
Judge Beeby in the Arb Court ruled against state wide separate awards and upheld incorporating higher rates into the award while noting employers may pay more if they choose. The remark follows NSW employers offering above award rates in wool and basil industries.
John Bryden Brown of EWvericity Motor Manufacturing in Sydney argued that retaining the current duties would lower the brief and raise industry employment by about 15 percent. He noted lower prices since the duty began and said his firm shipped 30,000 coils in three years. Ford Motor Company criticized the duty as unfair to tractor owners, especially Fordson owners facing higher coil unit costs. The hearing was adjourned.
Mr H 10 Gibson appointed industrial commissioner to the Mayor's Fund appeared in the Arbitration Court today as advocate for the Federated Emsine drivers and Firemen's Association. Judge Beehy wished him success and regretted the court had lost his assistance.
Adelaide Tuesday death of Dr Herbert Frank Shorney M D F B C S (Eng) at Cambridge terrace Malvern follows a career as a leading eye and throat specialist. He trained at Prince Alfred College and the University of Adelaide Melbourne London and Middlesex. He practised in Adelaide since 1908 served 25 years as ophthalmic surgeon at the Hospital and helped found the Australasian College of Surgeons. He authored papers on his specialty and enjoyed gardening and music.
In Sydney Teasday the Coroner heard a statement from Jobe Snelling a mechanic in custody on a manslaughter charge after a car killed George Chitten den aged 68 at Edgecliffe on April 20 Snelling allegedly drove on then leaped from a third storey window swam into the sea and hid among rocks all night before surrendering Wadham a traveller was discharged Snelling was committed for trial and Wadham released.

Early this morning a large safe was removed from the office of Fergus Model Dairy and Iceworks in North Brighton and blown open. The thieves stole 140 pounds in cash and 40 pounds in cheques from the safe. This was the third robbery from the dairy within 18 months.

J H Johnston won the estimate competition with 653. The actual figure was 10d above. A second carnival may be held in August. Port Pirie Male Voice Choir will give a concert to aid the playground.
The first shipment of beef from Melbourne under chilled conditions will be sent by Anatise & Co on August 10. Earlier trials from Sydney and Brisbane were imperfect, but new research aims to deliver London-bound meat in better condition and at lower cost.
