Don Juan, Count of Barcelona and heir to King Alfonso, would become king while General Franco would go into exile. Don Juan favors rule through the Cortes and says he would relinquish the throne if Spain votes for a republic.
Canberra reports the twenty third anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force as Minister A S Drakeford says the force now operates almost entirely offensively on all fronts. He notes higher Australian aircrew involvement in Europe India and Burma and a sevenfold rise in bombs dropped since late last year.
In the Australian House of Representatives the Sickness and Unemployment Bill faced a debate led by Minister of Labor E. J. Holloway who rejected R. G. Menzies' amendment calling for financing by contributions. Holloway warned it would abandon social security and likened it to the National Insurance Scheme. The amendment was defeated as taxation financing was defended. In committee, Harrison proposed that disabled soldiers could receive Bill benefits while also drawing disability payments up to 25 a week.
Mr Wells, general president of the Miners Federation, said 19 men called up during the fortnightly general strike on the South Coast coalfields have been released. He noted that the remaining men would be released as arrangements permit.
