In Sydney Criminal Court the jury convicted Thompson engineer aged 22 and Jowett motor 28 of wounding Dr Reginald Stuart Jones with intent to murder. A not guilty verdict was entered for Horace Clive Robinson 31 and Leslie Dunn 33. The jury spent about eight hours deciding.
Lea Clinton Carledge 23 of Fitzroy was acquitted today by a Criminal Court jury of murder and manslaughter in the death of American seaman Raymond Coombs. Coombs body was found in the River Yarra at Studley Park last December. Carledge testified that after a clash over manners he was attacked, they struggled, and he struck back with a beer bottle after Coombs stabbed with a knife.
Parents of BLAS Excelsior Band were invited to a final rehearsal before the Easter trip to Whyalla. The band leaves by bus at 7:00 and returns Monday night. A program of marches waltzes fantasies and hymns is planned with Mr W R Clarke as manager and conductor. Donald Lines 149 son of Mr and Mrs H J Lines Fourth street fell from a bicycle near home Tuesday and was admitted to Pirie Hospital surgical ward with a deep gash in a leg. Six stitches were placed and he remains under care. Also listed are Robert Brusnahan 15 Bust street Solomontown and Mr W Wallace merchant navy patient in the same Pirie Hospital ward, Wallace having fractured his skull in a recent ship accident and now recovering.
An RAAF fitter described finding a crack in an elevator hinge bracket on the Stinson aircraft between Mildura and Broken Hill. The plane crashed on January 26 near Bolton Hill, killing the pilot, co-pilot, and eight passengers. J McKenzie Wold testified he noticed a fault hours before impact as the aircraft failed and burst into flames.
