Woman found unconscious after bicycle near Carlton sweet

In Adelaide on Friday afternoon Mrs. Doris Pointon of Hawthorn was found unconscious near a bicycle in Carlton Rosebery. Police will interview her as the cause remains unknown whether she fell or was struck by a vehicle. She is hospitalized at Royal Adelaide Hospital with concussion and head wounds.

Notes Snatched at Tote Change Window in Adelaide

In Adelaide on a Sunday report states a tote change clerk lost a bundle of 13 five pound notes during a Saturday transaction. A man requested change for a five pound note, the clerk left momentarily to fetch silver, and both the bundle and the requester vanished.

Pirie lad, son of Mr A Pearson of The Terrace, featured in a Department of Information film shown at Austral Theatre on Friday night. The documentary titled Jungle Patrol reveals actual fighting in New Guinea and includes several Australians serving there.

Mrs C E Pavlich Passes After Five Months Illness

The death of Mrs. Ann Aphne Pavlich, 48, occurred in Magillot Ellendale after a five month illness. A Pirie resident since her teens, she married Clarence Edward Pavlich in 1919. Survived by husband and five children, including Kalman Pavlich, a former northern champion diver, with siblings Douglas, Doris, and Gwendoline. Widower employed at Telfer plant Smelters. Funeral in Pirie yesterday with pallbearers E Smith, R Curnow, G Springall, H Murphy, A Kenyon, J Reeves. Rev D Wi Annear officiated.

Fire damages Morphettville Racecourse stand

A Saturday night blaze at Morphettville Racecourse damaged the western stand estimated at £500. Caretaker F H Thurston said he was en route home when a cleaner alerted him, with fires on race days often sparked by cigarette ends. Fire brigade arrived 8:15 pm and had it under control in 30 minutes. embers remained in the basement later. Similar fires occurred at Victoria Park Racecourse in recent months.

Tarcoola Rest House improves facilities in Canberra

Mr E H D Russell MH R reports improvements authorized by the Commissioner of Commonwealth Railways for Tarcoola rest house in Canberra. The kitchen will be extended by 24 feet, two thirds for a lounge with a fireplace, eight feet for a storeroom, and a 6 foot verandah around the rest room. Verandah may be used as a sleepout after flyproofing, with canvas blinds provided.

Copley KOed by Lee in Northern Heavyweight heat

George Copley of Port Augusta fell to Frank Lee of Whyalla in the final round of their Northern Heavyweight heat at Parish Hall. Lee’s right and a follow up left combined to floor Copley after he had led through three rounds. The bout was hailed as the best in the early elimination heats as a large crowd watched with high tension.

Keane Forecasts 7 Percent Tobacco Ration Rise

Melbourne reports Senator Keane Minister of Customs promised about a 7 percent rise in the civilian tobacco ration for next month. He said the increase, plus extra supplies for discharged service personnel, would create a serious investment for manufacturers.

MR GEORGE REYNOLDS DEAD IN PIRIE COMMUNITY

One of Pirie s oldest residents Mr George Reynolds aged 74 died in Pirie Hospital on Friday after a long life as a waterfront horseman and smelter worker. He came from Yon Gala district and left a widow two sons and a daughter. Burial was in Pirie Cemetery with pallbearers named Hobart Murdock Dennelly Dalton Springall Mathews.

Band concerts in Pirie schedule Easter events

Land performers are to be featured in Pirie at Easter with Dells of arrangement for the band discussed. A concert on Easter Sunday night is set pending the Chief Secretary's permission, with another at Memorial Oval and a town parade. A possible Whyalla visit on Good Friday is noted. The Broken Hill Band placed second in a Sydney championship.
