Moscow reports a sweeping reequipment and reorganization plan for Russian railways. Officials dismissed or downgraded after a recent disaster. Foreign material from Germany will be used to modernize locomotives and standardize train operations with strict penalties for negligence.
In Adelaide area Glenelg burglars failed to steal notes from a secret hiding place in a Glenelg draper shop. A girl employee had placed the notes in a radio to save the evening takings, but the notes vanished and later were found frayed and jammed in a corner, implying rat involvement.
A Royal Commission appointed by Parliament to probe South Australia’s fishing industry will take evidence in Pirie on Monday April 15. Edward Edwin Bowen died in Pirie at 37 after a illness of two months. Born in Wales he arrived in Australia early and moved to Pirie in 1917 to work as a pipe fitter then refinery shiftwork and later in the assay office. He was a long time Buffalo Lodge and Australian Workers' Union member known for music and sociable work with the Smelters Bowling Club and motoring interests. No relatives in Pirie.
