Believed to be a dual function torpedo or mine, possibly dropped by a Heinkel bomber, with two pilots at the tail and a pointed nose. Swedish foreign minister Sköld warns against rushing into a Nordic security pact with Norway and Finland. He highlighted the work of secretary R G Keats and D B Middleton and noted contributions from Hog Giawen and EM Culling. The Recorder provided essential publicity and 47 trophies were shown in the clubhouse. An Adelaide player and D P Turnbull earlier called the event the finest collection of its kind. Melbourne reports seven to eight hour delays as overseas cable messages and shortwave broadcasts from Britain were seriously interfered with. Australian telegraph and telephone systems were interrupted, with lines to Sydney Canberra Adelaide and Tasmania out of action due to earth currents likely caused by auroral activity.
Delegates attending the first Easter conference of the fellowship Weld in Belalie completed their gathering in Pirie. An improvised bomb exploded in the mechanics shop at Geelong Grammar School injuring two students. V Lanne of Melbourne and Joe of Adelaide sustained serious leg injuries and were taken to Geelong Hospital. Witnesses heard the blast as alarms rang and staff responded with urgency.
An isolated New York report says a severe magnetic storm caused by sunspots cut off communications across the Atlantic seaboard and disrupted telegraph, telephone, and radio services from Sunday into Monday. The outage left the Middle West largely isolated from the East Coast and beyond.
